hk prize is an esteemed Asian contest that recognizes students’ academic accomplishments and extracurricular participation, awarding them both with financial prizes and the opportunity to conduct scientific research at some of Hong Kong’s premier facilities. Its success is a testament to the importance of cultivating young people with a strong sense of self-challenge and a desire for excellence in all fields of life.
This year, Michael Hui, top-grossing comedian of the 1970s and 1980s, was awarded the lifetime achievement prize for his contributions to Hong Kong comedic cinema. He was honored with the prestigious award at a ceremony held at the Four Seasons Hotel Hong Kong on May 17. Other winners included artists Sameen Agha and Michelle Fung, who won the Art Prize for their sculpture A Home Is a Terrible Place to Love and Painting Prize respectively.
The HK Prize also awards a scholarship to undergraduate and postgraduate students who demonstrate excellence in scholarly research on global Hong Kong studies. The scholarship is generously donated by former Vice-Chancellor Professor Wang Gungwu. The scholarship covers the cost of tuition and fees, and provides a book voucher worth HK$1,000.
To qualify, candidates must write an article on a topic related to Hong Kong that contributes to the promotion of knowledge about Hong Kong and has a broader impact in society and the world. The articles are then judged by a panel of judges and selected for the prize. The winner will be announced at an annual award ceremony, with representatives from the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and Central government agencies, as well as celebrities, in attendance.
The judging process is independent and objective. The winning candidate’s work will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria: the scientific and technological innovation achievements, the transformation of the achievements, the social or economic value created and their potential for application, as well as the impact of the achievement in promoting Hong Kong studies.
To ensure the impartiality and quality of the prize, the review process is supervised by an independent judging committee comprising academics from universities in Hong Kong. The committee will provide feedback to candidates on their submissions and give advice on how to improve their work in order to win the next award.
Moreover, the prize has a Board of Directors which is responsible for overseeing the whole review and compliance-oversight process and suggesting important scientific research fields for THE PRIZE; appointing members of the Review Committee and Compliance Oversight Team; setting requirements on nominating experts; verifying and approving the final reviews; as well as conducting general administration activities.
