MCAS Student Growth Percentile (SGP)

A student’s growth compared to students with similar prior test scores (their academic peers) is measured by a statistic known as a Student Growth Percentile or SGP. This measure is reported for each grade level, and a trend can be observed over time. It can also be used to compare the progress of students from different schools/districts.

The SGP is calculated by comparing a student’s score on a MCAS test to the average score for all students in that same grade. It is then divided by the student’s score and multiplied by 100 to obtain the percentage of his or her performance above or below the state average. The data is reported in percentile terms, which are familiar to most teachers and parents.

SGPs are an important tool for analyzing trends and the impact of educational reforms. They are also a valuable way to communicate a student’s results to parents and educators.

In order to use this information effectively, teachers and parents must understand how the SGP is calculated and how it should be interpreted. It is also important to consider the limitations of the SGP, and how it may be influenced by student demographic characteristics, such as socioeconomic status, race/ethnicity, disability, special education, or multilingual learning.

As more and more states adopt common assessments, the SGP becomes an increasingly useful tool for analyzing student achievement trends. In addition, the SGP is a flexible metric that can be used to monitor the effectiveness of an instructional program, evaluate the quality of school administrators, and assess the effectiveness of a new curriculum. However, the SGP is not a replacement for traditional achievement measures and should be used in conjunction with other data sources.

The SGP data is available on the MCAS Results by Student Group page of School and District Profiles. The SGP data can be analyzed by subgroupings such as student demographics, grade level, and subject area. The results can then be compared to other schools and districts to identify areas where improvements might be needed.

SGP data is also available on the SGPS Results & Reports webpage of the SGPS website. This data is a summary of the latest information available on individual schools’ student growth and is intended to provide an overview of key indicators for evaluating and improving a school’s instructional program.
