Hong Kong’s best athletes aren’t just bringing home medals from the Olympics, they are also taking home generous financial rewards. In fact, this year has been one of the most lucrative for HK athletes in recent history. And it’s not just the athletes themselves who are reaping the benefits, HK sports fans are also getting their money’s worth.

The 8th Inter-school Competition of Study Projects on Hong Kong History and Culture has been completed with a ceremony held today (September 25). Developed by the Museum of History and the Hong Kong Institute for Promotion of Chinese Culture, the competition encourages secondary school students to enhance their understanding of Hong Kong’s history and culture through in-depth research. This year, the competition received a record number of entries with a total of 18 winning projects, including two merit awards and 16 special prizes. The winning projects will be displayed at the Museum of History from September 27 to October 8.

A hefty prize purse is on offer this week at LIV Golf Hong Kong as professionals try to claim their share of the $2m on offer. The winner will take home a hefty $360,000 payout, while the runner-up will receive a much-needed $220,000 cheque. But who will be the inaugural champion?

The South China Morning Post has won 12 prizes, including in the Best Scoop category, at the Hong Kong News Awards 2024. Senior reporter Edith Lin and her team won the award for exposing unauthorised structures added to luxury properties. In addition, the newspaper’s reporters Kahon Chan, Natalie Wong and Lilian Cheng won a special prize for their coverage of a controversy surrounding a Dubai prince.

In the field of scholarly research, Prof. Cecilia Chu has won the 2024 International Planning History Society Book Prize for her monograph Building Colonial Hong Kong: Speculative Development and Segregation in the City. The prize is considered the top accolade in the field of Hong Kong studies and the second-highest internationally.

The SHKS is a non-profit, professional association for scholars and students of Hong Kong and its global connections in the past and present. The association’s mission is to provide a platform for multi-disciplinary research on Hong Kong, and to foster a community of academics and students of Hong Kong studies across America, Europe and Asia-Pacific. The organisation is affiliated to the Association for Asian Studies and an affiliate of the International Association for Hong Kong Studies. Its membership consists of more than 500 scholars from around the world. Founded in 2018, it has quickly become the leading global network for Hong Kong scholarship. The SHKS promotes the development of innovative, interdisciplinary approaches to the study of Hong Kong and its global connections. Its activities include organising seminars and conferences, presenting papers at international conferences, establishing a fellowship programme and publishing the journal ‘Hong Kong History’. It also maintains a website which provides a portal to the international community of Hong Kong specialists.
