HK Prize is one of the premier high school contests, rewarding academic achievements, extracurricular participation and leadership abilities. It also gives students the opportunity to conduct scientific research in Hong Kong’s premier facilities. Winners of the contest receive cash prizes and other perks, such as a chance to travel overseas to showcase their work.
This year’s theme for hk prize was “diversity”, inviting artists to explore the topic of inclusion and diversity from both local and global perspectives. The works exhibited showcased how diverse interpretations of the topic can be expressed through various art forms – from international displacement to labour migration; and climate change to feminism.
The prestigious award honors exemplary scholars and pioneers in the fields of science, technology and the arts. The winner receives a monetary prize of $2,000,000 and an engraved gold medallion. The runner-ups will receive a $200,000 cash prize and a commemorative certificate. The winners and finalists will also be given the chance to meet with leading experts in their field.
During the ceremony, a special tribute was made to Hong Kong’s renowned film actor and martial arts choreographer Sammo Hung Kam-bo, who was awarded the Lifetime Achievement award. Known for his roles in more than 200 films, including the iconic martial arts series Martial Law and The Legend of Fong Sai Yuk, Hung received a standing ovation from the audience.
Other highlights included the awards for best news writing and photography. The Hong Kong Post’s production editor Matt Haldane and reporters Dylan Butts and Xinmei Shen won first merit for their articles on the Canton-Hong Kong Strike of 1967 and core climate issues respectively. They also shared the second runner-up in the news video category.
Another highlight was the HK Prize for young scientists, which recognizes excellence in scientific research with global impact and encourages young scholars to continue pursuing careers in science. This competition draws thousands of applicants annually and is one of Asia’s premier awards. Winners not only receive a substantial monetary prize but can access Hong Kong’s premier research facilities and gain international exposure for their research.
The prize is administered by the Board, comprising a Review Committee, a Compliance Oversight Team and a Secretariat. The Board is responsible for reviewing and interpreting the Articles of the Charter; suggesting important scientific research fields for THE PRIZE; setting requirements for nominating experts; verifying and approving the final review results; and the overall management of THE PRIZE.
The HK Prize is an award that celebrates the best of Hong Kong’s science and innovation. It honours outstanding research in five categories: artificial intelligence and robotics, life and health, new materials and new energy, advanced manufacturing and fintech. The judging process is conducted by expert panels from each of the award fields. The winners will be notified by the end of May 2024 and invited to attend a ceremony in early August. The winning research will be published for the general public. The prize also offers a variety of perks, such as monetary rewards and shopping vouchers.
